Today started in a very fun way, we....

brought the flags we had made to All School Sing

We sang congratulatory and celebratory songs

and cheers

and at the end there was confetti to celebrate our NECAP scores and all the kids who worked their hardest on them in the fall.

We had new math packets with shape hunts

We made rhyming words in our magnetic journals

There was a special ice cream sandwich treat at lunch as part of the NECAP celebration

I just love when kids choose to read at Choice

at the very end of the day we had Library with Mrs. Horton.

We earned our ice cream party, whoop whoop!

Kids took pictures at Choice, the next three are from Ryan

Ella was our Habit of Heart and Mind nominee this month

and in Art we started making Zebras

Today went by in flash we...

did some work with our magnetic journals, kids are working on blending sounds to make words and are doing an amazing job with it.

we had so much fun during math and centers that I totally forgot to take pictures....

we built towers

and Nurse Rose came to talk about teeth, she even gave us each a toothbrush!

At the end of the day we had P.E. with Mrs. Lane, kids came back really sweaty, they clearly worked very hard today.

We ate a delicious snack (with a little treat)

and of course, spent the afternoon delivering and receiving Valentine's

Not to mention all the delicious goodies parents sent in, THANK YOU

We burned off all that sugar in P.E. with Mrs. Lane, we worked really hard on a new game with lots of balls

Today we....

Worked on some new uppercase letters

and learned a new math game called Six in All. It's all about arranging six tiles given a couple of rules.

We worked on finishing up our fairy tales, wait until you get to read them at home.

My beloved class camera has officially bit the dust :( I had my own camera with me today (check out the panorama of math) and Mrs. Horton has ordered me a super-duper-shock-and-water-resistant-kinderproof camera, I can't wait to have it in our classroom.

We also worked on a couple of challenging worksheets, Kindergartners have been all about the challenge this year.

Read with our Big Kid Buddies

Kids have been leading our letter drills for a few weeks now, they do such a great job.

We worked on some new upper case letters

We continued measuring shoes with cubes

It was Friendly Friday in the cafeteria so we got to sit anywhere we wanted at lunch

John, Simon's Dad, was our Secret Reader. He read Lion in the Library and we had a really great time listening to the story.

In Art we finished our winter drawings with watercolors and crayons.

Today we...

had a couple changes in table spots, which was very exciting.

There was a special performance by the Green Street Jumping Geckos at All School Sing, Kindergartners were mesmerized.

They did double dutch and one girl even hula hopped while jumping the long rope!

We were so excited about jump roping that we practiced with imaginary ropes after All School Sing.

We had a really fun snack of bananas and chocolate graham crackers

We learned how to write two more uppercase letters

and practiced our letter sounds and CVC words

There is still oobleck in the water table, it won't be here forever but boy is it fun.

Ms. Hemmingson came to read us Goldilocks and the Three Bears this morning, she left us with a cliff hanger.

We had Clementines and pretzels for snack

We got a new kid in class!

It snowed today! We grabbed our coats and black paper and caught snowflakes just like Snowflake Bentley.

They were the most perfect snowflakes, we could see all the amazing crystals and shapes.

We had a new routine in P.E. today and we got to play with wands. We even played wand tag!

I'm so happy to be back in school. Vacation is wonderful and we all needed the time to refresh but, I love this class and it was time to come back.

We started reading fairy tales today. At Choice these kiddos wanted to make a castle and so, consulted a book to see what a castle should look like

I went ice skating (as did a fair share of kids, there's not a lick of snow out there this year)

I will be here tomorrow morning but, will be absent Thursday afternoon and Friday. There has been a death in my family and I'll be attending the wake and funeral. I hope everyone has a restful and happy break. I can't wait to see everyone in the New Year!

Notes From Kindergarten 12/16

Welcome to this week’s edition of Notes From Kindergarten. It is amazing to think that we are one week away from Winter Break. We’ve been talking a lot about snow in Kindergarten. We’ve learned why snowflakes have six sides, how they are formed and where they come from. We’ve made paper snow crystals and are just dying for it to snow so we can look at flakes on black paper just like Snowflake Bentley. Snowflake Bentley used a microscope and we’ll use magnifying glasses. We have a few magnifying glasses around the room but could really use more if you happen to have one collecting dust in your house.

We had a change in schedule this week. From this week forward we will have Choice in the morning and Centers in the afternoon. Kindergartners have adjusted to this change magnificently; it already feels like it has been this way all year. This change also gives us the opportunity to be supported by another teacher during Centers.
Homework was a hit! Kindergartners have been begging for another packet all week. There is a new homework packet in today’s folder with some old and new activities. I hope everyone is getting a chance to hear their Kindergartner read, what an amazing gift.

a spaceship was built and many kittens saved during Choice

We made syllable hopscotch into phoneme and sentence hopscotch

We each flew a paper airplane that was made for us by Avery

In P.E. we had a new exercise routine

and practiced shooting hoops!

Had a very high energy morning activity

Went to All School Sing

Ms. Hemmingson joined us for snack and a book look

We walked like moose

Wrote letters

and the trick work "the" before going on a trick work parade.

We changed our schedule a bit and had Choice in the morning

We read a non-fiction book about snowflakes and where they come from, this is a picture of the kids reactions to seeing a picture of a real snowflake taken with a microscope

At the end of the day we had Centers, kindergartners did a great job with the schedule change

We read a Hanukkah book in Library with Mrs. Horton and heard her story about a bear coming to her bird feeders.

Today was an amazing day in Kindergarten!

We started the day with pattern blocks at table spots

During Literacy we had our first ever Center Time!

Kids got to read and illustrate their own book!

We played syllable hopscotch and read the room

After Rest we read Snowflake Bentley and made our own six-sided snowflakes to use as circle spots.

Choice was wonderful today, kids did a great job of managing their choices and settling in.

Today we....

got brand new table spots! Each name tag got a colored dot and kids got to sit anywhere at the table with the same color. It was really fun to pick spots out.

We had an eraser relay! Kids lined up and got to erase letters off the board after saying the letter name loud and proud

We worked on our dictation and in our magnetic journals. Kindergartners are getting really good at tapping out words.

I moved our bookcase and everyone was really excited to get a book during our Book Look time.

During Choice these kiddos were checking out our word wall, reading words and thinking of new words to put with first sound letters.

Painting was popular today, we made all kinds of crayon and watercolor paintings.

Welcome to this week’s edition of Notes From Kindergarten. This week seems to have passed in the blink of an eye. Kindergarteners did such a wonderful job coming back to school after a long weekend. The most exciting thing happened this week. Kindergartners started reading! We got out a bunch of beginning to read books and Kids went wild. How exciting will it be to have a story read to you at night?

Our field trip was a huge success. Thank you so much to our chaperones and to all those that offered. Kindergarten, First and Second Grade did an amazing job of representing Oak Grove School. They were respectful, kind and safe. If you didn’t get a chance to come with us on Wednesday and are hankering for some time with Kindergarten consider signing up to chaperone for Winter Sports. The Winter Sports sign up sheet is in today’s folder with all the info you need.

Snow Stuff Repeat: Despite the balmy weather this week, colder weather is sure to catch up with us. In short, it’s almost snow-stuff season. Once snow is on the ground Kindergartners will need to be fully dressed to play in the snow. Please make sure to send your child into school with a jacket, gloves/mittens, boots and snow pants. If you have an extra something that your child has outgrown we’d love to have a small pile of spare parts to lend out.

Today was another great day in Kindergarten.

Can you believe it's the first day of December? It hardly seems possible.

Today we......

Had the most civilized and lovely snack.

Worked on patterns in Math Workshop.

Kindergartners have been really excited to be the ones using Baby Echo during Fundations.

Balance has been the theme in blocks. Well, balance and decorations, check out all those well placed cubes.

In P.E. Kindergartners got to explore bouncing balls and learned how to dribble high and low.

We drew about our favorite parts when we got back to school

We had a really great rest time today.

There were puppies cooking in the kitchen

and builders keeping the block area "under construction".

Today we....

ate a delicious snack of goldfish and grapes

worked really hard on writing a ton of letters and words.

We played compare and made all kinds of patterns at Math Workshop

Many thanks to Meghan who volunteers at Choice on Tuesdays! Kids had such a great time building block barns and silos today while I started building our Word Wall.

Ms. Hemmingson joined us for the end of P.E. and even got to be a tagger!

Kindergartners did such a great job getting back into the swing of things today!

I never get sick of watching the morning dance

We got out a bunch of books that Kindergartners can read and my, oh my, they LOVED having the opportunity to read to me. It was wonderful.

We worked on the last two letter pages in our Student Notebooks

Kindergartners did some serious Math work while I did assessments before and after lunch.

Kindergartners had a great time at Music today with Mr. Davis and came back to class still singing!

Today we....

had a great time dancing before Morning Meeting

used our feet and hands to make turkeys

We built sentences using pattern blocks.

We made giant snowflakes!

There were all kinds of ships built during Choice

We even got a special turkey treat! Thank you Jessica!

In P.E. we had scooter relay races!

Today we.....

Did a ton of Literacy "listening games" at Morning Meeting.

We had a lovely snack of apples, oranges and smartfood.

We made our own boards for letter bingo

We wrote things we are thankful for on leaves to make Thankful Wreaths

We did a bunch of cutting to get the leaves off the paper and looking leafy.

We made snowflakes to hang around Oak Grove.

And built castles for kittens.

Not to mention the construction that was going on.

Today was a very special and fun day we....

Had a lovely Morning Activity.

Danced the funky chicken

Ate clementines and veggie straws for snack

Read with our Big Kid Buddies.

Used our Magnetic Journals

Had time for Math and Literacy Choice

We had a reading rest today.

Our Secret Reader Rebekah read us Skippy Jon Jones!

The best part of all was seeing Circus Minimus! It was a one man circus out of a suitcase and it was great!

First Grade joined us in Kindergarten to draw our favorite part of the show

I'm so happy to be back in the classroom! I missed this class!

Today we.....

did a really challenging color by number at Morning Activity.

We ate a delicious snack of peppers and pretzels ( a "p" snack)

We finished reading "Kitten's First Full Moon" and wrote about what we thought might happen next.

For the first time ever Kindergarteners got a chance to lead the letter sound drill with Baby Echo

We did a lot of dictation.

Logan joined us for Choice and was served a delicious lunch of canned soup and bananas.

We built amazing block buildings.

Last, but not least, we had a great time using hula hoops with Mrs. Lane at P.E.

Hello All,

I was out of the classroom for a training today. I got amazing feedback about Kindergarten. They were attentive, focused, helpful, kind, respectful, responsible and had a lot of fun. Many thanks to Mrs. Richardson who was in Kindergarten today and will be again tomorrow while I attend a class. I hate to leave a note without any pictures so here's a few from a couple weeks ago.

Today we....

Had a really great morning activity, there was a color by number and kids did a great job finding resources around the room to help them.

Did you know that we dance every morning? We do, here's a clip.

There was time for a great book look.

We wrote stories about our long weekend.

We shared our stories with the class.

We made and recorded patterns in Math Workshop.

Many thanks to Kelly who joined us for Choice and Music today, it was great! Look at all the art happening.

At the end of the day we made maracas in Music.

Today was a fabulous, if not really short, day of Kindergarten.

Ms. Hemmingson read us Go, Dog, Go!

We had a pattern factory for Math Workshop, kids made patterns with all kinds of materials.

We got ahead of schedule so we even had time for a bit of Choice

We had a really special indoor-classroom-picnic-lunch! Kids got to sit anywhere they wanted, even under the tables!

What a glorious sunshiny day today! We....

Had the most perfectly wonderful morning activity time today. Kids were so happy to be sitting and talking and working. It was a great way to start the day.

We had All School Sing with Mr. Davis

The whole school danced at the end of All School Sing.

We read a bunch of Cat In The Hat books.

We did all kinds of stuff at Literacy.

we built sentences, syllables and words and

Worked in our Student Notebooks.

We had to get out in the sun!

There was a lot of building at Choice today

At the end of the day we got to have Library with Mrs. Horton!

Welcometo this short-week’s edition of Notes From Kindergarten. We started a new math unit this week!Get ready to see and hear all kinds of patterns from your kindergartner. Asheet went home yesterday outlining some of the number games we’ve been playing.If you get the chance to play these at home you’re sure to have a ton of fun.

Despitethe balmy weather this week, colder weather is sure to catch up with us. Inshort, it’s almost snow-stuff season. Once snow is on the ground Kindergartnerswill need to be fully dressed to play in the snow. Please make sure to sendyour child into school with a jacket, gloves/mittens, boots and snow pants. Ifyou have an extra something that your child has outgrown we’d love to have asmall pile of spare parts to lend out.
